Hi all,

I'm looking to move from Chicago to San Antonio and am trying to find a rental. I came across a nice deal in the Five Points neighborhood (on the 700 block of Marshall Street), but after looking at the street view of Google Maps and doing some research, I'm a little worried about the crime. It looks like an old house that was gutted and renovated really nicely. Any comments on the surrounding area? Is it safe? I'm a young, single female. Thanks!

It's right by Green Vegetarian Cuisine!! Great news! They had some pretty good food there....for vegetarians. Haha. I'm a hardcore meat-eater.

Anyways, I think that neighborhood isn't the safest, but it's not the worst, either. I felt safe when I was there in the middle of the night. Anyone else able to chime in some more?

At least you're close to a whole heck of a lot of hospitals.

As Soviet said, it's not the safest, but it's not the worst. A few weeks ago, the San Antonio Express News had an article on the area in the Real Estate section. The houses over there are pretty rundown. One real estate investor is buying them up and renovating them, but he's only renting them out. Normally when a neighborhood is filled with rented houses, crime rates go up, the houses aren't kept up, and property values go down. Let's just say I'm happy I don't have to make anymore night trips to San Antonio College. It seems like I get an alert once a month about a student being robbed or assaulted near or on campus.

Maybe it is the father (of a daughter) in me, but I am thinking no young single female needs to be living anywhere that starts with "it isnt the safest".

IMO, it's not so much "the crime" to be worried about, it's more that this particular area is just run down and not really an inviting area to live in. In this surrounding neighborhood, you will be bored with nothing to do, and you'll feel trapped since it will be pretty much dead and barren in that area.

I live in the San Antonio College (Tobin Hill) area (east of Five Points) and it's awesome!

In this attached image, I outlined an area that I recommend. This is coming from someone (me) who has grew up in this area and who has lived in this area (since 2003).

Note: the further north you go (but south of Hildebrand), rent will get very expensive as you'll be in the Monte Vista Historical District.

I live 2 blocks south of Monte Vista on Dewey and McCullough (or Dewey and St Mary's) and I have a nice little apt in a multiplex...just a block from the Burger Boy, Mix Club, White Rabbit Club and just down the block from Candelight Coffeehouse, Demos Greek Restaurant, YMCA and many more places.

Contrary to what others might say, this is not a "bad area" to live in. I HEAR ABOUT MORE CRIME on the "NW/NE" sides of town on the news than I do about the San Antonio College area!

Are there bad "pockets" of run down places north of downtown? Sure. Are there good areas where it's great and very safe? Of course!

In this area, some neighborhoods are hit or miss, so go a little more north of downtown but not too far north (near Monte Vista) where it gets too expensive (unless you can afford it).

What is chosen to be reported on the news is anecdotal evidence. Statistically, the 78212 zip code has more crime than most areas on the NE/NW sides outside of 410.

Please provide this information. I'd like to see that.

78212 has plenty of clubs which is going to skewer the violent crime rate. The type of clubs there also are not known for shootouts. You rarely hear about residents dying though or anything like that.

In addition, a big chunk of the reported crimes/police calls for the area come from the hospital at the corner McCullough and Cypress, probably the emergency room.
