Getting ready to return- after being gone since 1976- to San Antonio and I've heard of the so called killer bees in S.A. How widespread is the problem there ?

I haven't heard of this...that doesn't mean they aren't in SA. Anyone?

Seems like killer bees swarming someone makes the news here about 3 or 4 times in the average year. Usually it's a landscaper or utility worker who stumbles across a nest of them in a utility box. It shouldn't be a big concern.

OTOH, as someone pointed out, fire ants are in just about everyone's yard.

I know this thread is older but I wanted to warn people. I was just attacked by killer bees in Brackenridge Park on Sunday. About 20 bees came out of nowhere and started stinging me. I got about 6 stings on my head, ears and shoulder before I was able to run far enough away. I reported it to 311 and the company that handles bees. The woman said that others had called about Brackenridge Park so I hope they can find them and get rid of them. Now I know how to handle them but was not aware at the time of my attack. The best thing to do is to just run in a straight line for up to 1/2 a mile. Do not try to swat them off as this aggravates them, which results in more stings and more bees coming to attack. This is what I tried to do at first and is the reason I got stung several times. It was a very scary experience and I am still suffering the effects of the stings. I hope nobody else has a run in with these bees!

30 bees swarmed you? yeah sorry but those weren't africanized bees. if it were, you'd have been swarmed by a lot more than 30 bees.

Well then I guess San Antonio has some really aggressive honey bees! The point of my post was to warn people of the bees that are currently on attack mode in a public park. I would hate to have a small child or a person with a severe allergy get stung by those bees.
