There's a lot going on in town, you just have to look a little. And if there's not enough going on, make it happen. There's a lot of Do It Yourself people here who haven't settled for the "don't like it, then leave" mentality. As for outsiders, I guess I'm one, but right now I wouldn't chose any place else. SA feels like home.

Welcome to San Antonio. I would be very interested to know how your perspective changes in a few years' time, as it has for so many others.
That's a very interesting thought. From my perspective, after moving here in June 2000.
DECEMBER 2000 -This place is awesome , I could see us retiring here. I think we made the right choice between SA and the DC area.
JANUARY 2005 - Well my husband is now officially retired and going to work in the public sector after 20 years in the military. Thank god that we chose to buy a house in an affordable city, have neighbors who have become more like family and a strong sense of community with our church.

SEPTEMBER 2007 - life in the SA area just keeps getting better. We have now completed and moved in to our retirement home and feel blessed to have found a place to call home that gives us so much joy.

Hi 2Blonde,

That's great, but, in line with the thread topic, I was referring to the new person still finding SA to be a place for young, hip, liberal people after a few years. You are retired military. Most retired military people love it in SA because it is NOT young, hip, and liberal, which further backs up my point.

That was kinda harsh, hello13685.

Sorry 2blonde.....most of us love to hear others' opinions:-)

What was harsh about my comment? I was happy to hear that 2blonde fits in well in SA. I think it's a fair statement to suggest that most retired military are not young, hip, and liberal. Did you think my comment was harsh martinez24 because, ironically given your comment, you are someone who does not love to hear others' opinions if they are not in accord with your own?

Gosh....I think I am most tolerate of others' opinions......generally agreeing to disagree is what most mature people do.

Sorry if I offended you...in my opinion, I felt it was harsh and I felt bad for 2Blonde.

Retired military does not equate to "OLD"...ie-"not young". A 20 year career retiree could be 38 years YOUNG!....and the "hip and liberal" part is subjective. Just about anyone that is retired military is a world traveler, Hello. Isn't that "international vibe" part of your definition of "hip"? Maybe the word should be "worldly" instead of "hip"......which is much more flattering IMO.

Hi wCat, I semi-agree with you about the worldly thing, but on the other hand... I have an opinion on the "military travel as worldly" thing that people might take offense to. Some of my good friends are in the military. Actually my best girlfriend is a military spouse abroad. It' s just my opinion, but I personally avoid awarding "worldly" credit to most U.S. military because they live on or near bases, unless they are on a battlefield, of course. They buy their American food from the American commissary, and have their American friends. They don't have to live in the local language, speaking it exclusively, nor do they have to adopt local customs. According to my friends who live it year after year, they are pretty insulated from the cultures in those countries. I'm sure there are exceptions, so don't beat me up over this. It's just my observation.
