Actually, Toyota is a publicly-traded company, and San Antonians, as well as anyone else, can buy shares of the company.

Are the trucks built locally suitable for the needs of the city's fleet?

COSA does buy Toyota cars (the prius for its carpool fleet), so I doubt they are anti-toyota. It was my understanding only a couple of trucks were built here and they may not be what the city requires for its operations.

Why stop at Toyota trucks? Why not insist that the city always favor locally-made products when one is available? That seems like a fair question that the owner of some other factory should rightfully ask if Toyota is given a place at the head of the line in a bidding process.

I'll answer my own question... because it's not a good business practice to give any vendor preferential treatment if you want to get the most for the taxpayer's dollar. When vendors compete, the taxpayer wins.

The city already "supports" Toyota by granting subsidies and tax rebates for locating their factory here. I don't have the numbers handy, but I think if you saw how much money San Antonio "gave" Toyota to open their factory here... well, it might surprise you.

Why should we support Toyota? They let San Antonio down!

Why is this even an issue? I hope the city looks for the best value for money when making such purchases, and insisting that they buy locally is ridiculous.

What if every city / state / country had the same policy?

Cheers! M2

An interesting article on the durablity of Toyota Trucks. FYI - the Tacoma is called the Hilux in the rest of the World.

On a side note - I know in Milwaukee 100% of their Police Motorcycles are Harley Davidson.

.
Interesting. I know the Hilux very well from Asia. Didn't know it was the same vehicle. And it makes sense that it's not one COSA is likely to buy - it's not the type of vehicle they're likely to need. At least when we used them it was driving through mountain terrain/across flooded rivers in Asia.
