I'm currently up because my insomnia is RAGING hard, waiting to see the clocks change and catching up on e-mails. But I also have a little bit of a novel to get off my chest.

To add insult to the injury of a dreary evening, I recently returned from Massachusetts after escorting a great friend to eternal rest. She was one of the first people I met when I enlisted in the Army. She was the first child of her family born in the United States born to Iranian immigrants who wanted a better life for their becoming family. They worked numerous jobs, advanced their own education, became citizens and proceeded to have 3 healthy, bright children. I met the eldest of the 3 and we became fast friends in the way being thrown into the mix of stress, physical strain, and homesickness can only do. We were pretty much the mirror of each other if not in physical attributes but in drive, character, and stubbornness. We were lucky enough to be young and carefree with each other while we traveled the world. We became such good friends that we integrated into each other’s families. Her mom would call me to see how I was doing, what was going on at work, and how I should pick my partners and what I should look for. You know normal "mom" stuff. She would call my Dad when she had a car question or needed some good advice on what to look for when she needed some electrical work done. (This was my Dad's hobby).

Naturally, as we excelled and advanced in our chosen professions, our professions pulled us apart but we knew that with a single phone call, the other would come running at a full tilt, guns blazing, ready to help each other battle the world like we used too. Phone calls, visits, email, Skype and even snail mail, helped keep us close when we were far apart. She stood beside me while I laid grandparents to rest and I stood beside her while she married the man of her dreams. She stood beside me while I made questionable life decisions in Vegas and I stood beside her while she did the same and I always made sure she got home okay. But I never in a million years thought I'd be getting a phone call at 0834 on a pretty Monday morning that my best friend, my "person" was gone and that she needed someone to stand beside her to take her home for good.

Her mom had called and said that she had suffered a stroke while getting ready for work. She was already gone by the time she got to the hospital. Then she asked me the loaded question if I would fly up to help her and her husband, who's not military, with the funeral procedures. Even though she was in garrison, she had served her country well and was granted a military funeral in her home state of Massachusetts. Her husband asked if I could "escort" her home as I had done plenty of time before. I agreed, like always. I went through my proper chain of command and was granted the opportunity to escort my friend and fellow soldier home. So, on Wednesday, I flew to Washington DC, met with her husband, made sure everything was in order, and saw her onto the plane. Got to Boston and everything preceded without a hitch. And Friday, on a cold, March morning in Boston, I stood before my friend, knelt down, said a prayer, and told her I will always miss her. stood up and rendered my last salute for her and walked away, happy that I was able to make sure she got home okay but sad that she would never need to be taken home again. So, Mina, my partner in crime, wherever you may be, enjoy the quiet now because once I get there, we're gonna be raising a little Hell again.

Sorry for my rant but it's events like these that only solidify my thoughts and beliefs. Live for today. Tomorrow is never promised to us. Yes, I have my responsibilities and I take those very seriously but there are some days when everything falls the way they fall and you really do need to just stop and smell the roses. Some days you just have a "need" to stay in bed all day and bum around or have a "need" to just get in your car, roll the windows down, and cruise along to your favorite music and see everything that’s around you. Those "Mental Health Days." I jump at those every chance I get. While I do like (and need) money and it has provided every nice thing I have (house, car, etc) it hasn't fulfilled me like the relationships I have/had with people throughout my life, whether good or bad. Don't mean to sound all "hippyish" (LOL) but I learned at a young age that we are NOT invincible and our bodies do have a limit and expiration date. But that does not mean I'm afraid to live. Very little scares me. Save for snakes. Where are their legs?!?! Those things are just not natural. :-) Sorry, one last inside joke.
I'm sorry for your loss, Tortuga. You're a good, good person.

This morning, I woke up with the feeling of wanting to care for something. So after work, I went to the humane society and adopted a cat. Lol. Then we went to petsmart and I bought much much more then anybody with one cat should buy. He is going to be EXTREMELY spoiled
