Devine intervention: Feds to question middle-schoolers on discrimination complaints | kens5.com San Antonio

KABB Fox San Antonio :: Top Stories - Moms Claim Discrimination at Devine Middle School -- Ted Garcia

I used to go to Devine all the time cause my grandparents lived there. That town is so small not much happens. This is pretty big news for DOE to go investigating the middle school. Shall be interesting to see what happens.

the girls "suffered racial discrimination" Pleassseeee. try telling that to people who had family member hung for being black in the 50's. the people are pathetic. If there are 20 white girls and 20 hispanic. and the 20 white ones are better. then you should have an all white team. forget about trying to be balanced, if you are not good enough to make the team then practice more. I did some substitute teaching in judson area and all you would here from these 14yr old pregnant girls was that all the white teachers were racist. hence the reason they were failing class.

Let the investigation show, then, that there is no discrimination. I think it's good to keep everyone in check from time to time. Hopefully the administration is correct and no one is found at fault, but you certainly cannot assume that (torpedos) based on the limited information given in the article.

I am speculating on what little information is provided by the news but I guess if it was the other way around, things would have been ok. When you can't get in by hard work and discipline, just complain your way in.

Devine is very much like Hondo, politics can get really dirty when it comes to race. One of the things I don't miss about living in the Hondo area.

I'll reserve judgment until after the investigation is concluded.

The KENS piece by Joe Conger was well written and thus enjoyable to read especially the first paragraph.

For this sort of complaint to even occur means that Devine has ethnic issues and that always involves both parties not just one. Maybe they won't find any discriminatory action within the narrow focus of the girl's middle school volleyball team but ethnic tensions themselves need not be illegal in any case.

South Texas itself has its legacy with these sensitive issues. We all have to live with each other so hopefully in time they sort it all out.

People are quick to play the race card when they are being treated "unfairly". Could it be that the white girls are better athletes than the hispanic girls? I used to live in a small town in that area and it is nothing but politics. I bet there is more to this story than what is being reported. But I am sure the top-notch investigators of the DOE and the Barney Fifes of Devine will resolve this matter with swift and fair justice.

So, the coach chose girls solely based on ethnicity, and not talent? What if the best girls hust happened to be non-hispanic white? Why would a coach deliberately put the more talented girls on the B team if he/she really wants to win? That makes no sense. I have lived in SA for six years, and have traveled throughout the area, and have never experienced these so-called "issues". Am I just not observant?

It doesn't make sense because it most likely isn't true. If the B team were good enough for A then wouldn't they be smashing all the other B teams because they are that good? Dropout rates might also be considered but I honestly have no stats. I thought upperclassmen, seniors and juniors, played varsity.

I still contend there are issues even if not these.

Please elaborate. Are you saying that if the dropout rates amongst Hispanics are higher than that of whites in Devine, this might be part of the cause for a federal investigation? If this is the case, the feds should investigating many more school districts across this country. What other "issues" are there between Anglos and Hispanics in South Texas? Please inform me. I am a transplant living in SA for six years, and so far I have not seen any.
