Where do you recommend to purchase and install a car stereo? I had my battery replaced the other day. In order to combat theft, a security code must be entered to unlock the radio whenever the battery is disconnected. Being the scatter brained idiot that I am, I can't find the code. My mechanic quoted me $79.00 to retrieve the code. But the CD player doesn't work. I think it is better just to replace it. Any suggestions are appreciated.

I had a good experience at Custom Sounds on San Pedro Ave. when I had them install a car stereo accessory that I bought online. They knew what they were doing, the labor was reasonable and the job was done neatly.

What kinda car is it? If you go to the dealer with proof that you own the car, they can look up the code for you. That being said, Mothers had never done me wrong. When I was younger(and not in san antonio) Best Buy was good. The positive to bestbuy is if you travel alot, there is always some where you can take it if you have a problem.

$79.00? Wow. I second a dealer. Maybe it was just my luck, but when I traveled to Houston a few months ago, I had some battery trouble. Long story short, I had to replace the battery. I went into a Ford dealer and with my VIN and insurance card, was able to look up my info, (proof I owned the car) and unlocked my stereo. Free. So, I don't think that's standard but it never hurts to try.

If it's a Honda by any chance (my sister had that problem and the Honda dealer wanted $79 to get the code), they have a nice little website: https://radio-navicode.honda.com/ We were able to get her code that way.

It's really easy to put in a car stereo, especially if you buy the wiring adapter. I bought my last stereo at Walmart and installed it in their parking lot (so I could listen to it on the way home) in about 15 minutes.

Look for a stereo that will read from a flash drive...you'll never have to burn another cd again and it won't have problems with skipping or anything like that.

Have you tried looking on the outside of the glovebox, or inside it?
Very often car manufacturers put stickers there with the codes on them.

Default Update

I called the dealership where I bought the car. The service advisor told me where the code was located. PRIM8 hit the nail on the head. The code is on a tag on the side of the glove box. Thank-you all for your insight and advice. I'm still looking to upgrade the sound system. I will check out the places that were suggested.
