The one thing I like about my neighborhood in San Antonio are the fig trees. I want my own fig tree! Is it too late to plant one in my yard now? Or maybe I should wait until January?

I wouldn't think it's too late. They must be pretty hardy we've had them many years. There's 6 or 7 months of good weather ahead.

From looking at the Aggie agriculture extension website the Brown Turkey variety seems really hardy. I've got to decide where to get the tree!

A fellow where I was working gave me a Fig tree. It was just a stick but now I get enough figs to make jars of Fig Jelly. Less than 10 years. The other one that grows like crazy are called Loquates. Evergreen shrub with small yellow fruit and a large copper colored seed. I don't know much about them, but they grow like crazy.

Fig trees do very well here; the sooner you plant the better otherwise it may struggle to get established during hot dry weather. Depending on where you live, go to Fanick's nursery or Rainbow Gardens (the one on Bandera Rd. is a real treat).

Loquats are pretty yummy...my mom's friend had a huge tree that produced a ton of fruit. We used to climb it (with coffee cans to supposedly pick the fruit into), eat the fruit and spit the seeds at each other.

No, but those are yummy too. Loquats are also known as chinese plums, I think. They kind of look like yellow-ish mini pears or mangoes. I have three loquat trees that have a ton of fruit right now. I love being able to grab a bunch and eat 'em up. I'm looking to plant some fig and kumquats too. Tasty trees all around!

Yes...loquats are called Chinese plums at least around here. Don't think I've ever had a kumquat. My Chinese plum tree is stunted by by a freeze in the last couple years as were my lemon trees. They have all survived but suffered a lot ...bark damage etc.

The long drought hasn't helped them either. My Key lime bushes have survived and now flourishing. Hope they fruit this year. My poor Chinese plum is loaded and the stunted limbs are really drooping.

Default Figs and loquats are delicious!

I had three fig trees in my yard here and learned to love them. At first, I wasn't sure, but I really miss them since moving from that house.

I picked a "Chinese Plum" from a tree on the side of the road and found it to be pretty tasty.
