Ive heard people say that Carmax is overpriced in the past. Myself and my immediate/extended family has bought 6 cars from them and I researched each one in advance. They were comparable price wise to everyone in town.

I've had pretty good luck with Gunn Acura and Gunn Infiniti. Except for the finance guy at the Acura dealership, both experiences were great.

Moderator cut: see comment I second the comment about gunn honda. I bought my used 2007 Honda Civic there in 2008 due to totalling of my old car. They don't allow haggling! Instead, they offer a very fair price for what they are selling. I compared prices on the internet with similar mileage, year, make and model, etc. Gunn came out either less expensive or in the same neighborhood. The servicepeople are what really help to "seal the deal". My assigned service rep Cameron or another rep is always there to answer any questions that I have whenever I have them. They also conduct an new buyer orientation that is worth the time. I applaud their excellent customer service. I wish that EVERY business strived as hard as they do to keep and grow the business.

Default Difficult,

Oil analysis will tell of coming problems as in brass, aluminum or steel metal shavings from the wear of different parts that are suspended in the engine oil. Mostly it will tell all.
Another way to see if a car's engine has wear is to start it and then remove the oil filler cap to check for blowby. If there is a lot of air pressure issuing back from the oil filler hole it usually indicates worn piston rings or valve guides
due to the escaping of compression from the combustion chambers into the crankcase.
If there are no oil leaks, coolant, or trans. fluid and the trans fluid appears clean that is a good start.
Put it in drive to reverse and back again to see if the engine rocks inside its' compartment, bad motor mounts. Also will tell if CV shafts are bad or u-joints
if rear wheel drive. You will hear a clunking sound. Also evident around right or left turns for front wheel drive. A whirring sound.
Drive the thing for at least an hour til it warms up, check for trans slippage, it will seem as if the thing is jerking or not moving at times as it should be,
a slippage.
Rock the steering wheel back and forth with the engine on to check if the front end parts are worn, you will feel some play when going from right to left and then back. ALso may hear something a knocking of the parts from underneath
if there is too much play(tolerances).
Squeeze the coolant hoses for pliability,(with engine cold of course) and the belt for cracking, listen for water pump or steering pump grinding or whining-
alternator noise indicating upcoming bearing failure.
Tires for uneven wear, needs allignment or replacement of ball joints or steering components.
Doors for uneven seals indicates an auto accident. Anywhere on the car look for ueven seams.
Buy American.
