This awesome news.

From mysa.com:

With hopes that it will become the largest of its kind globally, the City Council approved a deal Thursday with a subsidiary of Time Inc., to bring a Latino music and culture festival to San Antonio.

The People en Español Festival will be held here annually on Labor Day weekend beginning this year.

The event is expected to attract as many as 70,000 visitors in its inaugural year.

Even so badhornet I am skeptical this festival will even showcase the local culture and instead import out-of-state and thus foreign talent, at least foreign to this region. Which is expected since regional music is just that and not marketed internationally. The point is just because it is Latino does not mean it is Tejano and this is not a complaint since a purely regional show will not draw in huge numbers.

Will this though? The article states that they hope the revenue will cover all the costs. It does not say what will happen if not but I don't want to subsidize a marketing scheme hashed up by an out-of-state company. Reminiscent to me of the proposed Alamo anniversary concert that Phil Collins was supposed to host.

I hope the proposal fails but it won't be the end of the world if we end up footing another bill.

There are plenty of regional music festivals here. This festival doesn't come off as being a time to expose SanAntonio culture specifically, but the culture as a whole which does not only include San Antonio. It didn't come off as a Tejano experience. Latino includes many different groups, you know that. To get people here you have to be open to a wider audience- which this is.

Would I like to see a big Czech festival or the actual St. Patrick's Day parade, but I'm okay with this. If I wanted those big festivals I would find them. Does it irk me sometimes that there are huge Latino festivals and no Norwegian festivals? Sometimes. But until there is a Czech People or Norwegian People willing to sponsor those types of festivals I'll have to settle for this.

It excites me to think that someone like Juanes, Juleita Venegas, Paulina Rubio, Reik, Bebe, etc would come to San Antonio.

The article says city council approved up to $500,000 for this festival. Gee, I'll bet that was a hard sell with OUR city council. I must say I am relieved that it wasn't 5 billion they were asked to approve for a Latino Festival. I guess we got off cheap this time.

Fair enough ashbeigh that does make tons of sense. I was only wanting to augment bad hornet's statement that it being here has nothing to do with the local "Latinos" but perhaps other factors that make our city attractive for that type of event. Hoping for it to be an honest success and great for our city. Might as well support if in that we have already committed to invest in it.

Didnt the city just say they had no more money in the budget for these sorts of things and they is why they cancelled the St. Patricks Day parade?

That's too funny!!!

But yet, Hardberger was a two term mayor? Yup...sounds like true hate for anyone that's not Latino.

Let's stop the nonsense and get back to the original topic.
