Has anyone changed their car registration Owner's Address at the tax assessor's office? Do you know what documentation is required? I can't find this information on the TXDOT or Tax Assesor's websites.

Apparantly, in order to qualify for the homestead exemption on my new home, my most recent car registration receipt has to show my home under Owner's Address, not just Registrants address (using the TXDOT online change of address system does NOT change the Owner's Address!)

I will be heading over to the tax assesor's office on Monday with some documentation (driver's license which shows current address, utility bill, previous registration receipt), but I don't want to miss something.

Try this link: https://rts.texasonline.state.tx.us/...sChangeServlet

Address change form here: http://www.dot.state.tx.us/txdotefor...vletConfig.xml (changes address of vehicle owner or vehicle location)

According to the nice lady who processes homestead exemption applications (as well as the texas.gov website and the TXDOT website), I need to change the address of the vehicle owner, which can be done by mail or through the tax assesor's office. My question is, what documentation will I need to show the tax assesor's office to change the vehicle owner's address?

Edited to add: The Address Change form does not discuss what documentation I need. Should I assume that I won't need any documentation that I live at my address?

The link to the form I provided you specifically states that it is to change the address of the owner or the vehicle location. It does not list any proof that you would need to mail.

However; I would bring in anything else official that you have listing the address, such as a utility bill.

I don't want to do this by mail because the deadline is in early May and I need to get a physical receipt to submit, but thanks for your help.

Has anyone on City Data actually done this in person?

That's why I said "bring in". Print the form out, and take it on to the office. Or, like someone else said, visit a car title service. I've used SWBC on San Pedro. However, they will charge you around $25.00.

Just FYI, be careful about using the option to change your address on the usual forms they mail out. I did that last time, but the address change didn't get processed. It ended up being a big hassle when the renewal didn't come in the mail the next year.

I JUST did this for the same reason. I did it through the mail because I had time before the deadline but it was a pain in the tail.

In order to apply for your exemption, you have to have the address on your driver's license and your car registration updated. Before you can get it changed on your car registration, you have to have your driver's license changed. If you've already gotten it corrected on your driver's license, go down to the tax assessor collector's office with your license and ask them to update the address on your car registration. It'll cost you 2 bucks and they'll give you a reciept. You send a copy of your reciept and a copy of your license to the homestead expemtion folks and you will be good to go. It's the biggest pain and they do not make it easy. GRRRRR Good luck

unless you arent available when the tax office is open, why go to a title place when the office on babcock/410 will handle this for you without the extra charge?
