Do it! I lived in San Jose up into 2000. Moved quite alot in the East Coast and now have lived in San Antonio since March 2009. We LOVE it here! Can't say enough great things about it! VERY affordable! Extremely family friendly! So much to do in San Antonio or surrounding towns. Lot's of job opportunities! If you have or plan on having kids there's so many amazing school districts with homes that are actually affordable to live!

Good luck! You won't regret it!!

Just do your research and you should be able to avoid the trouble spots. San Antonio is like any major city, you have your areas of problems, just stay north of 410 and you should not have too big of issues. Also, to help avoid CA traffic try to find a spot inside 1604 but outside 410, that will make sense if you look at a map of the city. There are tons of websites that will give you crime statistics based on zip codes and you can also research for good school areas. One of the really cool things of San Antonio is you have places like Austin that is only an 70 miles away if you start craving some CA feel. But the biggest thing that I love about this city is how much nicer everyone is, you can drive around and random people will just wave hi, to just say hi, they don't want anything, it's bizarre when you are coming from CA where the only hand gesture you get from strangers is the single digit hand gesture.
I remember how off-putting it was for me when I first moved here & random people would strike up am extremely comfortable conversation with me at the drop of a hat. And now I'm used to it & even partake in it. With discretion, of course.

Funny how things work out.

If moving to San Antonio will better you and your family financially, then by all means make the move. Just as a word of caution, be prepared for culture shock, San Antonio is culture shock for many Californians. I have lived in SoCal (LA, OC and SD) and I have been to the affluent parts of San Jose and moving to San Antonio was such a culture shock for me.

Hello there.
We're moving from Los Angeles to San Antonio.

I heard Cultural Shock? Please explain...

I'll be there May 15 to find a home and go back to get my family on mid June. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Texas is not California. There are a lot of things you're used to doing a certain way, and when you move somewhere else, everyone is "doing it wrong". Except, they're doing it right, and you're the one who's doing it wrong

Keep an open mind. And don't forget that a lot of people do not like Californians because too many of them have the tendency to show up somewhere else and then want to start changing things to "be like home".

Wow…you are in for some surprises. Not just Texas but specifically San Antonio. Compared to L.A., you will find many things backwards and decades behind here. Dallas and Houston would probably closer to what you are used to in L.A.

As someone who has lived both in Dallas and San Antonio, I don't find them so different. I'm curious to hear why would you think they are?

I'm curious to see why you don't find them so different.

Both are in Texas, both share I-35. Beyond that, Dallas and SA are strikingly different in many categories.

I guess if you were living in Mesquite or the West Dallas area, then SA is no different than Dallas.

Moving to San Antonio is culture shock for everyone. It's just different from the rest of the country. Not worse than; just different.
