I heard years ago that the pantry HEBs in Houston weren't doing well at all and many were closing. I assume that's why I haven't seen any in S.A.?

These came before there were HEB PLUS megastores. Same pricing, just shrunk down. The fish and meat counters are one, only 25 kinds of salsa instead of 64, etc.

Thanks for the info. Guess I'll have to keep my eye on Wilderness to see what they do put in on that big empty field.

HEB also owns the land accross from Rolling Oaks Mall off of 1604 and Nacogdoches. Right now, there are no plans to build a store there, but it would probably be a better place for them to build than on bulverde. It seems like right now the focus of growth is in northern Texas in small towns surrounding Dallas. HEB Senior Managment really wants to get into the Dallas market.
I was told by a vendor in the know that HEB negotiated with Albertsons not to expand in Dallas but Albertsons had to leave the San Antonio area. Not sure that the "HEB" brand/stores are going to expand anytime soon in Dallas. Only Central Market is allowed in the Dallas area. If you look at a map, the stores HEB has in north TX are on the very outskirts of DFW

Search the forum for "Central Market." Why the city doesn't have more of them is is a topic that has been discussed at length in the past. Bottom line, according to insiders who know the decisionmaking process, is that HEB reserves Central Market for an extremely well-heeled clientele and the only place in the SA area that has enough people like that is Alamo Heights.

What so special about AH that it is more well healed than Rogers Ranch,La Cantera Area, Helotes, Stone Oak Area, and NE San Antonio. Everyone should have a chance, I guess WF and Trader Joe will take their place.
