As some of you may be aware, Bexar County has several websites that allow individuals who register to obtain personal information on county residents from property and legal records, to name a few. What many don't realize is that some of those documents include social security numbers!

WOIA just did a story on this (Personal Information Available on the County) that included a link to a form county residents can complete and submit to have their social security number redacted from the county records.

The form can be downloaded here (Adobe Acrobat required) and I strongly recommend that all residents do this to have this information that could lead to identity theft removed as soon as possible!

Cheers! M2

Saw this last night on the news. I simply cannot fathom why we would need to tell the clerk's office the obvious.

However, they only offer to redact it to the "last 4 digits". As anyone who has had to verify identity knows, the last 4 digits are a common identity method as well!

Thanks for the reminder!!

Heaven help the taxpayers if the county ever decides it will go through the hundreds of thousands of documents on file and look for SSNs.

Since it's available online, the real danger isn't the county, it's identity thieves!

The best move would be to write your state legislators and ask to get the law changed to prevent this from happening in the first place.

Glad ya'll think the story is informative. the county is a pain to remove socials and tdls. they will redact the whole social. You just have to tell them the exact document you want redacted. Go to county records and have social redacted, and vital statistics/dba to have TDL#s removed.

Just for the record, you may be at risk if you have filed any record with Bexar county since 1830. Power of atty, child support termination, deed, any contract recorded, tax lien. etc.... Marriage license has dob and name, not much there, but DBA, and Power of Attorney is the nasty ones. I've seen some where they just scanned in the whole application on a bank loan.... , and not redacted one iota of info....

I didn't have to give my SSN to get my DBA last year.

The county records used to be more interesting when they had the UCC information also...you could find out what kind of debts someone had.

DBA normally they have the drivers license attached. but tax liens also, complete info. you would be surprised at how much is available. Scary, cause Houston and Dallas have only index info, not scanned documents needing redaction. Even Marriage license is only name, date married, and date filed. No DOB at all.

The form says: "Please list all known documents filed with the county clerk."
How about if I don't know which documents? Which documents would those be?

The Bexar County Clerk's website can be found here, it will give you an idea of what kind of records they keep (property, marriage, etc) or you can try calling them at (210) 335-2216.

Cheers! M2
