Hello
We are visiting San Antonio this weekend from Dallas and are in a bit of a pickle. Our car is not starting (seems to be an electrical problem). We are trying to figure out our options. Looked at getting the car towed back to Dallas ... getting quotes of $900! Seems too steep. Any other alternatives people can suggest? TIA!

Buy a AAA premier membership, gives you 1 200 mile tow for free plus unlimited 100 mile tows. You would be responsible for the rest of the mileage though. Thats only $125, and then your covered for the rest of the year "just in case"

Its a tough call, but do you have any other alternative options? The drive from San Antonio to Dallas is really really far, trust me, I've done it before. I think the $900 is a fair going rate because 1) The drivers salary needs to get paid and his employer needs to make a profit as well 2) The tow/flatbed truck probably drinks a lot of diesel gas 3) the drive from San Antonio to Dallas will take almost the whole day... and somewhere halfway through the driver will have to stop for a meal break also.

To put things into perspective, when my moms Acura MDX broke down on the highway a couple of months ago, the flatbed truck charged us $130+ NYS sales tax to tow us to our mechanic who was only about 5 miles away. It may have taken 15 minutes to get the car onto the truck, and then another 30 minutes to get to the mechanic with moderate traffic conditions

Venus_dallas,

I've moved your post to the San Antonio forum here to hopefully help you get some local help/advice on what to do there without having to have it towed all the way back to Dallas.

So, SA Folks, can you help out one of our Dallas members?

Thanks All... and best of luck, Venus!

Can you call a mobile mechanic to come out and take a look at it? Or ask somebody for a jump and then take it to Auto Zone and have them check your battery and alternator? (have to wait until they're open tomorrow of course)

I had my car transported from VA to San Antonio for $500. Does your insurance include road side assistance? Sometimes that includes towing. Get it towed to a mechanic and have them fix it. Might be something simple like a battery or alternator.

In Jan 2012 I shipped a car from Kerrville to Detroit.

Used Six Nations Transport, Inc. 1-734-641-4379 and they were great.

IIRC the cost was about $600.00. (someone else paid, I just gave the car to the semi-driver).

I know for a fact the semi-driver dropped off a car in Dallas prior to meeting me in Kerrville because he called me from Dallas, said he was gonna be late because the guy didn't show to pick up the car, and he asked specifically where I wanted him to meet me in Kerrville.

Good luck.

take it as a sign that you should move out of dallas... but not here

seriously though. the AAA membership is probably going to be your cheapest bet.

Thanks everyone. Appreciate the responses.
Update: after about 3 hours of waiting while we were trying to figure out the options, the car started on its own, and we made it back to Dallas safe and sound! Still need to take it in and get it checked for what caused the problem. Definitely will look into the AAA option for future.
p.s. our insurance does have roadside assistance. But they cover only up to $80 for towing
