USAA Real Estate Co. and Houston-based Cambridge Development Group have started construction on The Residences at La Cantera, a high-end mixed-use project that will incorporate 323 apartments and more than 4,000 square feet of retail space, said Bruce Petersen, executive managing director of real estate investments for USAA Real Estate Co.

The project is the initial phase of Town Center at La Cantera, a multiple-phase project on about 150 acres that will include a hotel, office and retail space and additional multifamily units. The Residences will be located on a 5-acre swath of land east of the shopping center 6215 Via La Cantera.

The Residences at La Cantera is the first phase of the multi-phase Town Center at La Cantera mixed use development, which will include future phases of hotel, office, amenity retail and additional multi-family. The first phase will include a 3-acre park that will serve as the public heart of the Town Center, featuring a vibrant urban plaza, great lawn, adventure playground, a lush wet pond and picnic areas shaded by preserved live oak trees. A cistern will be constructed adjacent to the wet pond to collect the condensate water from the buildings to responsibly and sustainably provide water for the pond and irrigate the park.

The Town Center at La Cantera will be intertwined with a network of San Antonio-area trails linking urban parks and preserved natural greenways and providing an inviting system that will connect to the City's planned Leon Creek Hike & Bike Trail.

THis will be awesome...Even better than Austin's Domain my opinion! I live in Eilan next door and will be happy to see some neighbors...This is about time the project moves forward. There were always rumors/plans this would happen.

We have a trolley at Eilan already...Wish they would extend this out that way and to Six Flags and the Rim...MY WISH

4000 sg. ft of retail space. That seems off by an order of magnitude. 4000 is just a big house nowadays.

I agree 4,000 SQ if small...Guess being it's proximity to La Cantera Phase I/II that retail space isn't a big factor. It would be nice to extend retail even more and add more shops (H&M)...

This reminds me of the Reston Town Center in Reston, VA (DC suburb). Started small (a Hyatt and four mixed-use office buildings centered around a public fountain and open area) but grew to several high-rise office buildings, high-rise condos, and a number of quality restaurants and stores. The design aesthetic was similar to the image the OP included...hopefully this catches on here in SA!

The first time I visited La Cantera, I thought it was an excellent location for apartments and condos. It was bound to happen eventually. How exciting!
