Anyone has an idea about the current situation of the education job market in San Antonio?

I have a friend who just graduated with a EC-6 Bilingual Certification that could not find a job for this year. Some of his classmates have also had trouble finding positions this year. The past 2-3 years have been very bad for would-be educators looking for jobs as the change in state funding had caused many districts to cut positions. This year was not as bad, however, I feel that there is now a backlog of educators looking for jobs, so it might be a little difficult depending on your grade level/s and certification/s. The school my wife works at (SAISD High School), did hire a few teachers this year though.

Same situation, my wife has a Math 4-8 with 4years of teaching experience, a M Ed with principal EC-12 and PDAS/IDL certification. She have been applying aggressively at many districts in SA, but she got only one interview for a teaching position but no job offer

I imagine what's happening to all those freshly graduated kids who aspire to be a teacher.

Keep popping your head in the door. Schools will be rebalancing classes the first few weeks, and may need to pick up an extra teacher here or there. Never ceases to amaze me the parents who enroll their kids one day before school begins (not because they just moved here, because they just realized that 'oh, my gosh, it's August!!')...

There was a story on the local radio news last week about the subset of parents who don't enroll their kids in a school until Tuesday after Labor Day. Apparently, it's quite common, and a source of frustration to administrators.

But that, too would be a reason for job-seekers to keep trying after school starts.

I know that SAISD has students register (from scratch) every year, and this may have something to do with it. An acquaintance who works there laments that very fact, as it is time consuming and frustrating. The districts I know of (including my own) do a spring "re-registration" form, a simple "are you returning?"

Still, we have people show up, child in hand, on day one, asking where they can register...

..
It makes some sense, since people often move in the summer, sometimes unexpectedly. However, registration is only 2 weeks before school starts. And if you happen to be out of town that week, you have to wait until the few days before school starts to do it. It's not always possible to plan travel schedules around school registration. Would be so helpful if we could do it all online! Nothing like the stress of scrambling to register just before school starts.

Our SAISD school does a Spring "are you returning form" to guage how many spaces are available (because they have a large out of zone population in the lottery), but you still have to re-register in August. In person.

Last minute hiring exists, but they are insignificant when compared to the thousand of applicant waiting to get a call for an interview. I have been looking for job posting for almost 6 months now, and I can confirm the trend that many school district tend to hire their Assistant Principal, Vice Principal and Principal from within the district, and thus despite the fact that the job posting is open to internal and external candidate, and I'm not talking about one or two cases, it can go up to %95 of the positions that need to be filled during the summer.

That also made me and my wife very upset.

The only way I was hired in NEISD as a teacher was because I knew a friend who had clout in the district.

NEISD for us looked like a compound with huge tall walls. Two years ago, it was very easy to get an interview at NEISD, now if you don't make a certain score in their Gallup prescreening system, they won't bother calling you for anything.
