why you might ask? as it turns out, buying stuff on newegg has become a nightmare with SACU. it turns out they have blocks on over 20 states in the USA. what does this mean? it means if you want to purchase a bunch of external hard drives that are going on sale, but the retailer happens to be in say... california, your transaction will not go through, even if you have a 6 digit balance in your checking AND savings.

according to their fraud department, they see an 'awful amount of fraud coming out of those states'.

my nightmare began when i was on newegg, looking to fill a few orders. the block that i had requested be permanently removed was somehow placed back on my account. the caller who took my call said that i had requested a 3 month removal of the block in july. i informed her that even if that were true, 3 months is not up and i should not have to call again to spend my frickin money.

eventually the block was removed and the real nightmare begins:

not 2 hours after my payment had charged, i start getting calls from their automated fraud department. 'bla bla bla unusual activity bla bla bla'. i ignore it initially, but they persist and in a period of 72 hours, 16 calls from their 866 number were placed to my phone before my account was ultimately locked.

the kicker is, i had to wait until today since member services is not open on the weekend and the bank i went too (broadway/410) said they could not assist me with fraud issues.

so, does anyone have a credit union recommendation that does not have idiotic policies in place, like blocking almost half of the USA because 'hurr derr we think a lot of fraud comes from those evil places'?

cheers!

I've bought thousands of dollars worth of stuff from Amazon and Newegg and have never had a problem with RBFCU. In addition, the two times I did have problem with my account, one stolen check and one fraudulent card charge, those problems were taken care of quickly.

dont get me wrong. when there is an issue, SACU takes care of it pretty damn fast. this block crap is really annoying me and im going to look into RBFCU.

i did find a workaround though, since the block removal is only for my debit card and not the wife's: i linked her card to my paypal account and made a purchase from a california retailer. went through no problem.

I had problems with Firstmark last weekend. Like SACU they are closed on Sundays. I was able to get a hold of someone from their social media department to assist me, but ultimately my problem wasn't resolved until Tuesday at 9am. So, be cautious if looking into them. I'm not leaving them, but this was like a first strike. uggghh.

I hear great things about Navy Federal Credit Union. I've always heard great things about them from my friends who belong. They appear to only have one branch here though.
I belong to a credit union I joined when I lived in MD. They've been great and I can deposit checks through an app on my phone so I've not needed a branch here.
NavyFCU appears to have one of these apps as well so not having a lot of branches might not be an issue?

RBFCU gave me problems with making an online order while on vacation in Delaware. I tried numerous times but the order wouldn't go thru. Finally gave up. RBFCU is a great banking institute and has never disappointed me but this one time they did.

do you remember where the purchase was coming from? as in, were you buying from newegg but the purchase originated in, say, california?

its important because im trying to avoid a CU that has blocks of any kind for unfounded reasons.
