I traveled to your lovely city last week for business from my home here in Baltimore and had a great time. My meal at La Fogata was tasty, my brief tourist-y forays to the Riverwalk and the Alamo were interesting, informative, and fun, and everyone I met was very hospitable.

I stayed at a hotel near the 10/410 interchange (and what an interchange THAT is!), and I found myself on Vance Jackson Road several times. Who, or what, is/was Vance Jackson? Somewhat to my surprise, I've been unable to figure it out with either Google or a search of this forum and I'd be very interested in learning about it. It was a pretty nice street/neighborhood, I thought, and I'm just curious if you can enlighten me. A person of some local renown? Two last names combined? Neither of the above?

Thanks in advance from a very satisfied visitor to your fine city.

Default Re:Who or what is/was Vance Jackson?

So glad you enjoyed your visit to our fair city! Looks like Vance Jackson was named after William Houston Jackson (1803-1888) who was a Brigadier General in the Civil War and was engaged in cattle ranching on the M. Leal grant near the present day IH-10/Loop 410 interchange and for William Vance (1813-1878) who with his father and brothers built the first U.S. Army Barracks in San Antonio.

I've always wondered about that. Like I know the story behind De Zavala and Wurzbach but never knew this one. There are several others that I wonder about, but won't high jack this thread to ask about them.

Many of the streets in San Antonio are named after the ranches or towns they went to/by. Vance Jackson being the one you are familiar with. There is also Jackson Keller, Lockhill Selma, and others. And of course Bandera Rd., Fredericksburg Rd., Austin Hwy., Blanco Rd., Also NW Military which goes to Camp Bullis and SW/SE Military which once connected Brooks, Kelly, and Lackland AFBes. There is a great book about the subject, though I can't think of the name right now.
