Windsor Park Mall became what Crossroads/Wonderland is now. The place was hardly getting any business before it was closed down. Thank goodness Windcrest took over because San Antonio had abandoned that area.

So sad about Windsor. Growing up in the early 80's and late 70's, it was like North Star Mall. I'm hoping the area will eventually de-ghettofy.

My family live in Camelot and Dover off of 78.
I grew up in the Walzem area. It breaks my heart when we visit to see
This area now.
We used to live in the glen back in the 70's.. I took my 8 yr old to the house I grew up in on GLEN TRAIL...Jeezus H it looked like a damn crack house!!!!
I hope the city can do to Walzem what they did to Austin Highway.
I live in Dallas now. believe me it was a huge culture shock when I moved out here.
I sure do miss my H.E.B and Bill Millers out here !!!!

Too many thugs and hood rats invaded the mall. A person who worked security at the mall made a post in another thread. He stated that security removed the undesireables from the mall. But their parents complained to the mall management stating that the thugs were spending money at the mall. Hence, they were allowed to return. End result? Stabbings and shootings.

I left S.A. in 81 and had heard the mall got infested with degenerates and would-be thugs. I hated to see such a good place go caput..If they put up Wallyworld the same thing will prolly happen there.

I used to work in that area a few years ago and a business owner told me about how in the early 90's a lot of the area became section 8 housing and a lot of the less desireables started to hang out at Windsor. Sadly those were the people who killed that area, he was holding hope that the city will come in and help the area. I also hope it does also, that area once a great place to eat and shop many years ago.

Moderator cut: orphaned

That area started to go downhill since the mid 80's. Back then, I worked at the Bill Miller's across from Roosevelt High School. One of my co-worker's husband delivered pizza for Domino's. Even back then, he stated that Domino's would not deliver to certain parts of The Glenn after dusk. It seems like that area really went south after the Albertson's closed.

Some of my fondest memories growing up are from that old Albertsons, the Spoke Shop and the little Ms Bairds place across from it. Good times. At least that Bill Millers is still going strong. Every time I come to SA I stop there for brisket.

As someone who grew up in the area (I went to "Kinder Care" which was torn down for the Bill Millers there now) and now work in the area, I have to say that Windcrest and Rackspace have really done a good job in giving that area a booster. Between the YMCA in the old Albertsons, the old Target now has TWO tenants moving in there, I really don't think theres any large retail space that isn't occupied on Walzem now on that side of I-35. In the middle of the day, you can see many Rackers and others walking around, and at lunch time, most of the local restaurants are packed. They really need to decorate it for the holidays, and keep attracting local businesses. That HEB needs to expand, as it's horrendously out of date, and Wal-Mart moving in, despite the fact that I personally hate them, is another good step for that area.

I'd even say Camelot is cleaned up considerably. The Glenn, on the other hand, still needs a LOT of work, and may continue to hold the area back until it is, but overall, Walzem isn't nearly as dead/desolate/dangerous (at least during the day) as it was only a few years ago.
