What are some notable charities that would enable my family to package some gifts to a family in need? We don't really need to deliver them in person, but it would be need to know a little about the family so we can give to them a gift they would enjoy rather than completely random.

We would love to start a tradition in my family of doing something for others each holiday season.

I know Elf Louise is more a place to just go pick and wrap. Are there others we can look into?

The Salvation Army's Angel Tree may be a good choice. Just stop by and grab a kid (or kids or family) and drop it off at the same place.

I just heard on the radio this morning that Family Service Association desperately needs people to "adopt" needy families to meet their goal of helping 750 families this holiday season. They have enough money on hand for fewer than half that many right now. There's a link to a form on the site, if you want to adopt one.

They also hold a gift-wrapping event in early December to wrap the gifts for the families.
