Our home is being built and we have the option of putting a ceiling fan on the covered patio. Is a ceiling fan really going to make a difference in TX heat?

Depends on if your patio is going to be big enough to sit on, and if you plan on sitting out there and have some plan to take care of the mosquito issue. If you're really going to use your patio a lot, then the fan might be nice for evenings. Lots of my neighbors have fans on their patios but I never see any of them outside, so for them it's a waste of money.

just a little bit of breeze is all ya need to keep the skeeters away. Just make sure it's big enough for the area and that it's "Damp" rated.

Damp rated? What is that?

Rated for humidity and wet conditions. It does make them more expensive.

We have a ceiling fan on every room in the house and the back deck area...would NOT be without them!!! I don't know if it is way overpriced as an "option" but you will want one and can be added later if too expensive at their rates...

I would absolutely get the ceiling fan - we have five outdoor fans and use them frequently May through September. Make sure it is made for our outdoor conditions here.

If you're going to sit outside, YES. If you're not likely to ever sit outside (and many don't), then don't bother.

However, they're cheap and really easy to install, so may be worth doing it yourself.
