ALE is a self-contained classroom meaning it is only special needs students and it is not mixed with general ed students. It serves moderate to severe levels of varying disabilities. Many children with mild disabilities are mainstreamed while the ones with more profound disabilities usually attend a specialized school campus altogether. Most ALE classrooms are a mix of grades and ages, but some campuses have more than one ALE class so they can divide the students (say, like, one class for K-2nd and another for 3-5th).

The NEISD, NISD and Boerne school districts are the best places to look into relocation if you have a special needs child. NEISD has a good special education program and they are also in proximity to Stone Oak Therapy for private Speech and OT services. NISD is the largest school district so it has the most special education resources and the most widely trained staff. Pediatric Therapy Specialists offer private Speech and OT in that area. Boerne spends more money per student than any other school district in the state of Texas so your special needs child will have a lot of resources there.

Arc of San Antonio is a family connections type of organization. They can help you with info and questions. If your child has autism, there's the Autism Society of San Antonio as well as MoCAA (Moms Connect About Autism). Those types of groups can provide you with insight and support. I just moved here myself and have decided to homeschool my special needs child while also utilizing a therapy program called RDI. RDI is based in Houston. If you have the option to check out Houston, you definitely should. They have several great private schools for students with disabilities and many more private therapy centers than you will find in San Antonio.

If I didn't decide to homeschool, I would have chosen Encino Park Elementary (2 ALE classrooms), Redland Oaks Elementary (the main campus in the NEISD with the most resources for all kids with different disabilities) or Boerne. I hope this is helpful to you! Good luck!

Look into the Holmgreen Center. It is a specialized campus in the NISD.

And here's a link to Any Baby Can, another program I was referred to. Home | Any Baby Can of San Antonio

I don't agree that the Special Education program at NEISD is good. Relationships between campus level special education and Central Office are severely strained. Central Office is notorious for micromanaging special education teachers to the max, so you will see adverse effects on special education on all campuses for that reason. I know because NEISD special education practices were the reason I left for Austin earlier this year after almost 20 years in San Antonio. As for my colleagues in North East special education, a lot of them are going over to Northside because special education there is better supported and staffed and they are taking their experience, resources, and skills with them.
