I filed for a homestead exemption early this year and received confirmation of it's receipt but no other information. How do I find out if my request for exemption was approved?

look on your next tax bill and you should see it there. They don't send a letter or anything to let you know they got it. I suppose you could call and ask.

BTW, for anyone reading this. never fall for those stupid scams the lawyers send out that offer to fill it out for you, I can't believe it's legal for them to charge that much money for something that takes all of maybe 10 seconds to fill out.. I believe that is reason #28912331283 to hate lawyers
not all lawyers, but most..

Go to bcad.org, pull up your property by your name or address, scroll down a bit and where it says Exemptions: hopefully there is an HS there for homestead. Ours was there within a matter of days.

Thanks Sapphire, did as you suggested, but no exemption noted. About how long did it take for your exemption to be approved?

It only took about 4 days. Did you own the house on 1/1/07? If not, I don't think you get it for this year, but if they acknowledged receipt of it then it should show up for next year. Don't sweat it--it's not like it will save you much--yes, it's a nice gesture, but we're not talking about a large chunk of money.

Sapphire,

Yes, I've owned the property since 2006. With taxes sooooo high in SA any little savings would be appreciated, smile. I guess I'll just have to find the appropriate phone number and call about the status of my request. Thanks much for your input.

Oh, trust me, we'll take any savings we can get our hands on, too. One thing, though--we never got any type of acknowledgment--it just showed up on bcad. Did you fill the form out yourself and send it to the appraisal district or pay someone to do it for you? I am the world's worst procrastinator so naturally my application was mailed ON 4/30/07 ( I think that was the deadline), and I figured mine would get lost in the shuffle, but miraculously there it was. Maybe you missed the deadline to apply?

Cheaters never prosper.

thanks, rd. I have bcad bookmarked so I check it out every couple of weeks, just to make sure we still own the place.

Default Homestead Exemptions in San Antonio

Sapphire,

I completed the form myself early Mar 07, followed all the instructions and forwarded to the appropriate office. The only correspondence I received was a copy of my request bearing a stamp indicating that something called a "Designation" was filed with the Bexar County Clerk's office. Oh well, I'm hopefull that a call to the Appraiser's office will put an end to my confusion.
