I'm new to SA, just bought a new home and am in the process of furnishing the home. Does anyone know of any discount furniture outlets in the SA area? Also has anyone had experience with any local interior design services?

Are you looking for inexpensive temporary furniture.....or are you looking for quality furniture at a discount rate?

There are quite a few "discount furntiture stores", but they tend to have low grade construction quality, or are some funky style or color that local stores won't even carry.

Best to shop the better stores and ask about sales. Be careful if you shop Rooms to Go...they have a NO RETURN policy on ALL PURCHASES. If it doesn't fit, or is damaged on delivery, send it right back with the delivery truck!

Top furniture stores:

Stowers (my personal fav)
Louis Shanks
John Williams
Ethan Allen

Higher to Mid range:
Star
Havertry's
Bassett

Mid range:
Diane Flack
Fisher
Ashley
Lacks

Low:
Rooms To Go
The Room Store

There are also a number of great independant stores like "Hill Country Interiors", "Sofa Mart" etc....that have a nice selection.

If you drive to San Marcos (40 min drive up I-35) there is North Carolina Furniture Factory Outlet. This is the only store that might qualify as a TRUE "outlet"....but compare prices. I have found that some things and not always discounted or even bargains.

Most of the mid range to higher end stores have their own staff of designers.

I think Paka also mentioned that they purchased some furniture on Overstock.com. Shipping is almost FREE on any purchase.

Good luck and welcome to San Antonio!

The Salvation Army Store at South Frio and South Alamo is a good place to find treasures. You may find some keepers or temporary furniture all at a bargain. There are also some independent shops on South Presa for the same type of furniture.
Good luck in searching. It can be fun and rewarding.

As someone mentioned the North Carolina Store in San Marcos is good...we bought a few things there and have been really happy. Also, there is a Bassett Furniture Direct off the 10 and one off the 35.....we bought a beautiful sofa there for our kids game room and it has worn really well.

Happy Shopping:-)

I use to love that place but the last time i was there they didn't seem to have much that was even in good shape, let alone a good price. I am hoping I just hit them at a bad time.
