The nonprofit umbrella organization charged with ensuring that government agencies, nonprofits, businesses and individuals across San Antonio take action, SA2020 is asking for individuals to resolve in 2013 to take on one volunteer opportunity.

...

“SA2020 recognizes that none of us can accomplish all of those things alone, that the strength that we have as a community is that if we all work together with a singular vision and defined goals, then we can achieve some of the greatest things that any city has achieved,” he said.
SA2020 seeks volunteers to improve city - San Antonio Express-News

Glad to see this isn't just going to be businesses and nonprofits doing all the legwork but giving us chances to be part of the change.

That link says nothing about what they need volunteers to do. What goals are they talking about?

It appears to me that they are appealing to the public in general to commit to volunteering somewhere, somehow, in some way in the organzations and non-profits that serve across the city.

you dont need to know the goals, nor what you will be doing. just show up and work your butt off for unknown reasons. it is very nice of these politician. There is no goal folks. that is just the way it is. Oh wait, the goal might be world peace.

Well that's all wonderful and everything, but speaking for myself, I'm already working 60 plus hours a week so I can afford to survive and pay taxes that support such groups that help the " unfortunate" in this city. I'm one of those people that would help just about anyone in their time of need. Unfortunately, they want the two things I am short of....time and money.

This the website that gives a bit more detail about the opportunities available. Some require more time than others and have various goals. One of the them is being a reading buddy to a elementary school student. I've done it once and it was only for a semester, one hour a week. Another one is volunteering at Cafe College to assist students in completing their FAFSA. There are other opportunities in other areas besides education. There's even a quiz on the website to help you narrow down your interests.

TPR also has an article.

Quote:
Under the direction of Darryl Byrd, CEO of SA2020, 11 categories ranging from education, arts and culture, environmental sustainability and neighborhoods were identified as interests to attract volunteers. Partner agencies like Rackspace and AT&T will lead the causes, and currently only half have a lead agency.
Volunteers Needed To Help SA2020 Progress | TPR

This is great news. Mr. Byrd, who was the CEO of Pearl Brewery before, and the companies involved will make this a success. I know that AT&T has a decades long history of volunteerism here in town by coordinating and offering opportunities for their employees. Their experience is welcomed and it is likely Rackspace also has similar offerings which will now be extended to all of us willing to help.

skeet09 I also for a semester volunteered as a mentor at Twain. Helping with homework and the like and serving as a counselor at a YMCA camp. There are plenty of others who have a history of volunteerism so it is great they are now making it easier for us to jump in for new opportunities.

Can't wait to see the results of our city-wide effort! I have already seen things get better in town, this is just going to accelerate that trend.

Kudos on your contribution. I wish I could devote a bit more mental energy right now but I'm working on my Masters part time and working full time so that's pretty much my free time, hence not checking out city data as much.
Once I'm finished, I want to jump on the bandwagon again.
