Because people abuse it. They will call EMS for a splinter in a finger. While it is being treated, a REAL emergency will have to wait.

Wait until Obamacare comes in. If you think lines in emergency rooms are bad now, just wait. Peop;e will be using them to fix hangnails.

I support the fee and am actually surprised that it is only $500...If it was free or cheap every jackass would use it just to cut in line at the ER.

I'm pretty sure that what they bill you doesn't cover the actual cost of providing the service, so taxes subsidize it to make sure it's available when you need it. We pay taxes for VIA, but you still have to pay a fare when you get on the bus.

You would not believe the people who use the ambulance as a taxi service. I hope Medicare/Medicaid does not pay for it.
