I have to take my son out on a 1 night camping trip to get some kind of badge for cub scouts. Looking for a quick one night camp out to accomplish this goal. I'm a city slicker so I want to drive up, park my car, set up our tent and make a camp fire. Not looking to see any bears or any kind of wildlife. I'm new to San Antonio so I don't know if I need a permit or pay a fee. Willing to do both. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Try this spot...wonderful, not far away and sounds like it might fit the bill. Lots of "amenities" and some REAL potential for some wonderful father/son bonding! Enjoy your time with them now...they grow up WAY too fast!!!

Government Canyon State Natural Area off Galm Rd (outside Culebra/1604) just started allowing overnight camping on the weekends. Will run you about $20 I think, but the sites are right there off the parking lot.

The KOA Kampsite on the East side of town is nice and bear-free.

Guadalupe River State Park is quite close to town. I used to take my boys camping there.
