I never had a "theory"... I was asking- throwing out scenarios- if this is why unemployment went up. Trying to discuss is sometimes difficult here. Just hope sequestration doesn't kick in. I personally know of 3 people who will be furloughed, two of our kids' jobs will be impacted, and a neighbor who owns a small business outside the base which depends on federal employees.

I just get tired of the "our cost of living is low in SA" rant...well, yes, it better be since wages are low.
Right now, austin and sa have very similar costs of living. Right now housing is actually cheaper in austin making austin lower cost to live. That probably will not last long.

Ugh, I think you have that mixed up. Housing in Austin is the most expensive in the state. COL is not close either. And then to say Austin is cheaper is the cherry lol.

I was pretty shocked by it as well whenI did the cola comparison about a year ago. As of right now it looks like austin is more expensive by about 7%.

Well, I'm sure a quick google search would have provided a wealth of evidence to support either claim. One of you should have done that. There's still time.

It says you can take a 7.04% cut in pay to move form Austin to San Antonio.

I wonder what city that poster was comparing to Austin.

Oh and if you want to move from San Antonio to Los Angeles you need a 49.64% raise!

I looked at that site and got these results based on moving from San Antonio to Austin (with a current salary in SA of $50k):

Equivalent income in the city you are moving to: $53788.17. Percent increase to maintain standard of living: 7.58%.
How is the cost of living in Austin less than what it is here, even by your own example? Your own reference (not that I'm giving it credence) says you're wrong!

BTW, I would tend to agree somewhat with these results, but I'm not a fan of Bankrate.com as a completely reliable source for valid economic research.

When I ran this comparison about 6-12 months ago, SA was more expensive because austin housing had crashed harder than it did in SA.

But that doesn't make any sense because houses in Austin were still more expensive than those in SA before, during, and after the recession.
