Having done this and wanting to avoid smaller roads and unplanned weirdness, we did the interstates from Portland, through Idaho, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico for an I-10 run to San Antonio. Easy drive. Easy to chart on the maps. You can get electronic resources and there is a neat book that describes all the exits and resources on them. We stopped at brand name motels outside of smaller towns.

You might save time with other routes but this is easy. Through CA - nope.

When I drove to San Antonio from Oklahoma this week, I used this route to avoid it.

I-35W S through Fort Worth
Take exit 57B to merge onto I-820 W
Take exit 429A toward US-377 S/Granbury
Follow US-377 S into Stephenville
Take US-281 S to San Antonio
thanks for the update. the major contruction from FW to hilsborough was finish I thought. I didnt have any major constuction my last trip. good to know.

I'd recommend this route.

I adjusted the route to take you through Grand Junction, Silverton, and Durango, CO (some beautiful country) before you hit the monotony of the low desert.
