Does anyone know if the city gives tours of the garbage dump? My 3 year old is completely obsessed with garage trucks. This guy has known trash and recycling days since he was about 20 months old. He demands we go outside every garbage or recycling day to say hello and wave to the garbage man. They are kind enough to honk and wave. . I am trying to see if they will let him see a garbage truck up close and check it out much like the fire dept does? I tried called waste management and the girl that answered was clueless. lol.

My 3 yr old is the same.

We've never gone to the dump, but we go chasing after trucks... Call again. I doubt they give set tours, but I am sure they'll arrange one for you.

Here is an idea he will love; take him to a firehouse. The firemen, if not busy will give you guys a tour of the firehouse and will let him sit in the fire truck..

Thanks ggeorgie we do that about 2xs a year. we take them cupcakes and cake. I want him to be able to know who would be rescuing us in the event something happened and to not be afraid of them. Most of the firemen at our firehouse know him and have recognized us at HEB.

I think the dump might be a safety issue, there might not be any areas of it that are presentable enough or safe enough for a kid to visit.

My kids have gotten to see the garbage truck up close a couple times...we always bake when we have a school holiday, and the kids race out of the house to share their baked goods with anyone who passes by, just about. They always share with the garbage men, so we've gotten to see the two steering wheels in the truck and stuff like that.

Call David McCary @ 210.207.6428. He's in charge of Waste Management. He will either hook you up with a tour or get you to someone who will.

The city doesn't operate their own landfill anymore. They contract with a private company. I believe right now they use Allied Waste's Tessman Road landfill over off I-10 East.

When I was in college studying urban planning, one of my classes was solid waste management. We took a trip to the landfill and got a nice tour from the operators, so I'm sure you can probably arrange one, even if it's just informal. I've found that folks in most occupations are more than happy to show people what they do.
