TPTB? The powers that be? If so, who are they?

If you're talking about Alamo Stadium, that had nothing to do with funding a soccer stadium. It had to do for voting for one thing and then the district turning around and doing something else with said money. But then maybe you're talking about something else.

Sure there are advertisers here that can sponsor one game they know is going to get a lot of local press. The question is, can they afford to spend that same amount, 80 more times, every single year? Ask the Spurs and you're probably not going to hear the answer you want to hear. The Spurs struggle themselves getting enough corporate sponsorship to compete with bigger markets. Sure they do alright but split that amount with another major league franchise and both those franchises will struggle.

Fans seem to often confuse attendance with franchise success. The reality is, attendance is just one factor and it certainly isn't the biggest one.

In addition to the number of large companies, two of those cities also have about double the population of San Antonio.

Tampa - 4.5 million
Detroit - 4.2 million
San Antonio - 2.2 million
Milwaukee - 2.1 million

But you asked about major companies, so here you go...

San Antonio has 5 companies in the Fortune 500:
12. Valero
101. Tesoro
144. USAA
377. NuStar Energy
394. Clear Channel

Detroit has 20
5. GM
9. Ford
47. Dow Chemical
147. Whirlpool
161. TRW Automotive
189. Lear
201. Ally Financial
205. Kelloggs
222. Penske Auto
287. DTE Energy
308. Stryker
313. Autoliv
321. Visteon
338. Masco
355. BorgWarner
380. CMS Energy
429. Auto-Owners Insurance
441. Kelly Services
459. Con-Way
481. Meritor

Tampa has 16:
85. World Fuel Services
106. Publix Super Markets
109. Tech Data
157. Jabil Circuit
172. Nextra Energy
197. AutoNation
226. CSX
233. Office Depot
342. Darden Restaurants
363. Winn-Dixie
401. WellCare Health Plans
407. Ryder System
413. Harris
423. Health Management Associates
426. Fidelity National Information Services
472. Fidelity Financial

Milwaukee has 9:
67. Johnson Controls
116. Northwestern Mutual
129. Manpower
146. Kohls
337. OshKosh
382. American Family Insurance Group
410. Rockwell Automation
457. Bemis
458. Harley Davidson

I am not saying having a major league baseball team in San Antonio would be a bad thing but I am skeptical about the potential it would have for success. With that said, I wouldn't be willing to spend a penny of taxpayer money to support it and there is no way a franchise comes here without major incentives from our local government.

I am also saying, I am much more likely to continue attending 5-10 Missions games a year than I am to attend 1 or 2 major league games. Of course, I am just one person.

YMMV

Ummm, no, not much of a lottery player. I have been known to buy a couple of scratch offs and throw them into Christmas stockings from time to time but, other than that, not much of a lottery player. Not really sure what that has to do with Major League Baseball in San Antonio but thanks for asking?

I'm sorry. I am honestly unsure how you got the numbers you did because you literally posted the fortune 500 list for entire states and claimed them for the cities you listed.

Tampa has one fortune 500 company and Lakeland (suburb of Tampa) has one. So the metro area of Tampa has two fortune 500 companies.

Fortune 500 2012: States: Florida Companies - FORTUNE on CNNMoney.com

Milwaukee has 5 with one additional metro F500 for a total of 6.

Fortune 500 2012: States: Wisconsin Companies - FORTUNE on CNNMoney.com

Detroit has three fortune 500 companies with five additional metro fortune 500 companies for a total of 8.

Fortune 500 2012: States: Michigan Companies - FORTUNE on CNNMoney.com

So basically the two metro areas with twice the population as San Antonio have 2 and 8 F500 companies respectively, while San Antonio has 6 metro wide. Closer to Detroit than Tampa.

And why you used a unofficial population for Tampa, one that the Census does not acknowledge, when their MSA population is 2.8 million. Compared to SA, it's just a 600,000 difference.

People here for the most part would rather throw their money away on Fiesta, tacos, and beer. Sad but true. I'd love MLB or NFL here.

Good job incorrectly generalizing.

I'm talking about Gordon Hartman's soccer stadium. He tried to get public funding to build it from both the city council and commissioner's court. Both turned him down.

San Antonio draws millions of tourists and conventions. Do people actually think these two groups wouldn't attend MLB games downtown?

Tourists and convention attendees don't get a vote on the taxes it will take to fund construction of a stadium.

Do you have any statistics to show that tourists and convention attendees actually go to games of the pro teams San Antonio already has? IMO, that's not a decision one makes on impulse, like which restaurant to go to for dinner. It's a conscious choice to travel to that city for the purpose of seeing a game.
