Ah, thanks -- wasn't aware of that. That does indeed change things.

Another big obstacle is that there's a city out there that should have a team -- Portland. They're currently around 20th in MLB TV ratings, despite not even having their own team. Attendance for the Blazers and their MLS team are sky high. Whereas San Antonio has question marks around economic value and fan loyalty, a team in Portland would be a virtual shoo-in to do extremely well.

I suspect a few mediocre years will erode the attendance. They now deeply discount middle of the week home games, something they didn't used to do.
Heck, I bought $6 tickets for a middle of the week game this year..it cost me more to park!

San Antonio draws millions of tourists and conventions. Do people actually think these two groups wouldn't attend MLB games downtown?

Nice point TXEX06!!! I was planning on bringing that point in soon. Cheers! Come on San Antonio, lets PLAY BALL!!!

Tourists and convention attendees don't get a vote on the taxes it will take to fund construction of a stadium.

Bo, Bo, Bo... As I mentioned initially in this forum, I proudly served in the world's greatest navy for over twenty years and I myself was a tourist everywhere I went! No, the tourist don't get to vote but they're impact on a Venus as big as MLB is too so huge that you can't measure it in the turnstiles! If you look at any statistic about San Antonio's tourism then you can certainly imagine from an outsiders perspective how much more an enormously nostalgic city like ours will most certainly have toward the San Antonio A's financial success. Yet, more importantly will be the huge impact that a city which has never had an MLB franchise. Of course, there are many variables which I am hopeful we will all eventually discuss in this awesome forum. Lets keep this going San Antonio, were only in the top half of the first inning!!! Steerrrriiike one, Bo! Lol

If we're going to fleece tourists and convention attendees, I would prefer the money went to fund infrastructure improvements as opposed to leisure pursuits. I would gladly give up the opportunity to have another major league team in this city in order to NOT spend 2 hours in traffic on 281 every day - or 1604 west of Bandera.

I get it that you have an opposing view.

Just so everyone has a better perspective on the potential impact of tourists in San Antonio...
San Antonio's latest tourism stats from- yes, MLB fans- our very own forum site (City-Data, San Antonio)-- survey says?
28.1 million annually, including military and manufacturing!

As a die-hard A’s fan myself who’s relocating from the East Bay to San Antonio later this year, I have to say I absolutely LOVE this idea! I’m sure that, even with all the potential obstacles of a move like this (the team’s, not mine LOL)…it could still get done quicker and more smoothly than anything in San Jose ever will. The Giants are just NOT going to surrender the territorial rights, so the only logical choice for Wolff & Co is to move out of state. Portland and Vegas have been discussed, but to me San Antonio makes perfect sense as the 7th largest city in the US.

Lew…are you reading this??? Probably not, but one can hope!

Bradford72!!!! My new friend!!! Welcome to San Antonio, you are going to love our weather here! Excellent post by the way... You made some very good points there. Not only would this move be easier than San Jose, who by the way is the 10th largest city with a cross bay rival for territorial and market rights but also the 5th MLB franchise in that state! I'm sure Lew is going to here about this forum and this cuties extremely strong interest soon enough. There is a key element that coincides with the eventual success of this nostalgic city and bringing the Atletics to San Antonio and that is putting a potential World Series team on the field on opening day. That my die hard MLB fans could only be the Athletics, the second all-time winningest franchise in the Majors!!

CoachBfor3....
You read the same article that everyone else has! But what you haven't read is that Lew isn't interested in Portland, although TV market is a big $$ baseball. In fact, so big that every team makes a % of $$ off of each and every market contract. Not just there own. The great Northwest honestly isn't that great for baseball anyway. It rains too much, is always chilly, the ball doesn't carry well, and Portlandia isn't the kind of city that compares to a city like San Antonio. Heck, you could add the Sea Hawks and Mariners along with those other teams you mentioned and put em all together with all those years of comparible experience and what do you get? One lousy championship team way back, back, back, back, back in 1977!!!! By the way, look how much we would save the city without having to put a roof on the stadium?!?! Lol
