I suspect a few mediocre years will erode the attendance. They now deeply discount middle of the week home games, something they didn't used to do.
Heck, I bought $6 tickets for a middle of the week game this year..it cost me more to park!

Well you have to have a team worth watchin, ya know!! Lol
Lets Go A's! Lets Go A's! Lets Go A's!!!

Agreed. I can't believe the building is only 20 years old. Inside, the corridors with exposed light bulbs and ugly grey walls remind me of a gymnastics training facility in communist East Germany in the 80s.

Aside from that I don't think SA is big enough or interested enough to support a baseball team. Three years ago, I went to a Rangers game against the Red Sox, and it seemed like a 50/50 split with the fan support. The Rangers fans seemed bored, and just passing the time waiting for football season to start, and the Rangers had an awesome team that year, too. Keep in mind this was in DFW. The SA metro area is less than a third in size. No, I don't think it will work.

Huh? Your rationality and methodology is quite odd. It makes no sense. So because DFW showed poor support at one game you went to, SA couldn't supping because we're 1/3 the metro size as DFW?

Yet, why does St. Louis do very very well? Why is Milwaukee in the top 10 for attendance year in, year out? By your logic, they shouldn't even have teams.

If you give Detroit credit for Dow Chemical and Whirlpool, you should add Houston and Dallas companies to your San Antonio's list.

The Brewers have only finished in the top 10 in attendance 3 times since 2001.

Heck, you could add the Sea Hawks and Mariners along with those other teams you mentioned and put em all together with all those years of comparible experience and what do you get? One lousy championship team way back, back, back, back, back in 1977!!!!l
Isn't the topic fan support and market viability?

Those Seahawks have some of the best fans in the NFL, selling out most of their games in their existence and having a season ticket waiting list topping 20 years long at times. The Mariners, despite being one of the worst franchises in baseball history have led MLB in total attendance multiple times! The Blazers had one of he longest sellout streaks in NBA history and regularly finish in the top 5 in attendance while the Supersonics have led the NBA in total attendance multiple times and were the first NBA franchise to average over 20,000 fans a game for an entire season. The Timbers sellout and the Sounders are far and away above anyone else in MLS attendance.

Despite crappy teams, the NW has supported their teams. They are by far the most underrated fans in sports.

Summer is their dry season. But I have to question Portland's support for baseball. When the MLS came about, they decided to renovate the baseball stadium for soccer/football use only and said they would build their AAA team a new stadium, except no neighborhood in Portland wanted a stadium. After several attempts, the owner put the team up for sale and relocation. Sounds like they are content with NBA and MLS.

If SA landed an MLB team, I'd buy season tickets and I live in the Austin area. I know lots of people in the Austin area and the Hill Country that would attend regularly. The tourist draw is also a valid argument. Whenever I travel to a city for business, I always try to see a baseball game. South Texas is passionate about baseball. The sponsorship aspect is a weak spot for SA landing a team though...

Detroit doesn't have any other cities in the state of Michigan to compete with for corporate sponsorship with regard to other MLB teams. Dallas and Houston both have local teams.

I get it that there are some people here that want MLB in San Antonio. I get it that they will use the recent event(s) here anecdotally (is that a word) to justify the viability. I respect their opinions, I just don't agree that San Antonio can support that kind of endeavor along with the Spurs long term.

I don't think in today's economy it is smart to raise taxes for something like this, nor do I think it is wise to pound unsuspecting tourists with ridiculous taxes on hotels and rental cars. Trust me, there are groups out there that monitor this kind of activity for conventions and advise industries against hosting conventions here because of it.

I think it is laughable when people mention jobs in the equation when it comes to the tourism and attraction industries. Minimum wage jobs are not something that should receive any priority from any form of government looking to increase the quality of life in their communities.

I respect the opinions of those that want it I just happen to have a contrary opinion.

YMMV

Portland thinks it is a major league city. They want the real thing, not be at the same level as Tacoma, Fresno, or Reno. In the last decade the Oregon legislature passed a bill which would partially fund a MLB ballpark.

Oregon is good baseball country. Good MLB TV ratings, good Mariners support when they are winning, and two top 10 college baseball teams.
