Leonard's houses for the infill project all will use innovative methods such as radiant barrier roof decking, programmable thermostats, energy-smart light fixtures and even a heat-pump water heater that uses hot air to provide energy.

Devora said that this sort of technology is normally stereotyped as being reserved for more chic, developed neighborhoods on the Northside.
Green, affordable housing on tap for District Three - San Antonio Express-News

A nice start, 8 green and affordable homes will be built in District 3, then 18 more homes will be built in other parts of the city.

This is just one component, while we need more green homes (Vista Verde already does a great job weatherizing homes), we also have a need for walkable, liveable, and sustainable communities which should just no be reserved for those wanting to move back near the core but for all who already live inside the Loop and even those who choose to remain outside of it. We all deserve walkable communities.

Many also believe we can either build out or up, and both are fine strategies for those who would take advantage of them, but we also need to be doing exactly what this program is doing, taking abandoned or neglected spaces and getting better use out of them that benefits and not detracts from the community, be it rebuilt homes or just more green space such as parks and trails it is welcomed here in the South side.
