I suppose it depends on what you consider to be a suburb, but the cities are a considerable distance apart.

I don't consider San Marcos to be a suburb of Austin; it's 30 miles south of the city. Austin/San Marcos is a plausible metro area, but Austin/San Antonio is not IMHO.

Nobody refers to LA/SD as the same metro area, but there's practically no empty space between them except land on Camp Pendleton.

That may be true currently, but Houston and Dallas have had a different evolution. Houston (the city) grew earlier because of the immigration via Galveston and the early colonies that were established on route to Louisiana before Texas was even a state.

DFW actually has a longer history of international flights from around the world, so the demographics of the city changed significantly in more recent years.

For the most part, Houston and Dallas both have a much greater multicultural population for different reasons....but the difference between minimal compared to San Antonio and it's lack of access to more international countries.

I disagree; I think they're too far apart and there's too much nothing between them.

No it doesn't. Its CSA does, but not LA's metro area.

Yet New York City's CSA includes Bridgeport New York. Los Angeles' includes Riverside. And Houston's CSA includes Huntsville. Go measure the distance between Houston and Huntsville.

CSA is CSA, it's one ahead of MSA. You compare CSA to CSA and MSA to MSA.

Okay, well tell that to the guy who tried to compare CSA to MSA (wasn't me).

CSA's only need a small percentage of the population to commute anywhere in the MSA. A reason why Huntsville is included in Houston's CSA. Many in Huntsville commute to the business districts in Conroe/The Woodlands.
