So, I want to take the family to the beach this summer. All of my experiences are with 1970's vintage condos with mildewed carpet. I keep thinking that there must be other options. But to my knowledge, on the whole Texas coast, there isn't a single newer upscale option on the water. There are some hotels that require you to drive to get to the actual beach. There are some houses that sleep 12 that are bigger than we need and no service. Am I missing something- are there better options with nice accomodations and good service?

Airbnb.com

We have used this for finding accomodations from Rome, Italy to all over Germany to Wimberly Texas.

If you told me I had to give up ALL my internet sites except for ONE, AIRBNB.COM would be the one I have to keep!

In order to have nice accommodations around Port Aransas, we usually rent a house in Cinnamon Shore even if it's larger than what we need. It's not a hotel, but we prefer it with kids. Everyone can have their own bedroom if they'd like. Management is there if you need them and they offer some services like setting up beach chairs and umbrellas for a nominal fee. Have fun!

Also depends on which beach you're going to. There are many renovated condos and some new properties at South Padre Island. You can also check vrbo.com and/or homeaway.com. Those are rentals direct from the owners and will show pics. Hope this helps!

vrbo.com (Vacation Rentals by Owner) is where we scheduled our last.

A word of warning for both airbnb.com and vrbo.com - READ THE FINE PRINT. Those hidden costs can quickly turn that great deal into an overpriced one.

Port Aransas Vacation Rentals - Rockport Vacaction Rentals | Starkey Properties

Rented a house from them twice in Port Aransas and once in Rockport and been impressed. They have everything from houses on the beach, to private communities, to condos.

Do you want a condo, or are you able to afford to rent a house?

And which beach are you visiting?

I use the sites mention here to rent condos. Port Royal is the nicest for kids (or anyone for that matter), but you will have to pay dearly for it. I can often fly to Miami or San Diego and stay a week cheaper than driving to our coast (no kids). Rents are simply crazy during the prime season here.
