Took a drive down W Commerce yesterday and it seems like it turning around in some pockets. OLLU is still one of the most beautiful areas of SA. I still do not understand why lofts and other college type vibes are not built around the area. OLLU is one of the most beautiful campuses in Texas.

I absolutely agree! Of course, I'm a student and adjunct faculty there so I'm a little biased.

If you drive down Martin past Zarzamora toward downtown you get one of the best views of downtown. It is stunning.

I've talked to people who work at OLLU. They say the area around the campus is sketchy. The people who work on the campus don't like to be out in it after dark. Redevelopment might help, but I imagine the current state of the area is a deterrent.

Yea I can't believe the city would not try to re gentify the area. It is like have the Taj Mahal in the middle of a ghetto. The same goes for St. Mary's. No college vibe there either.

The mayor doesn't run the city single-handedly - the city council is there too.

The mayor's mother worked for equal rights for the Hispanic community in SA when they had none. I can forgive her if she thinks things haven't come far enough. The fact that she doesn't think SA is perfect doesn't mean she hates the city. She wouldn't work as hard as she does on local causes if she hated it.

Both campuses need many more students living on-campus. Actually OLLU needs many more students period. I feel like both universities could do more to uplift the communities immediately around them, starting with affordable adult education opportunities and childcare, but that would have a very long-term return on investment.
