My husband and I are considering relocating to San Antonio to be closer to my mother. We're currently in Chicago and love our older (1898) home where we currently reside. Any recommendations on older (50+ years) neighborhoods in decent school districts? Our son is only 7 months old, but we'd like the opportunity to live somewhere where we could send him to public school. I think we'd want to keep the home price under $300,000, if possible.

Thanks,
Tia
(who's desperately hoping to come home to Texas!)

We're in Lavaca and live in a c.1885 house. though we're in the much maligned SAISD, our neighborhood elementary (Bonham) is stellar and just became a charter school and our HS is well respected. The middle school has a poor reputation but Bonham is hoping to become K-8 soon.

Another neighborhood is King William, but you'd have a hard time finding something under 300K.

Another neighborhood with different schools and older (c. 1920-40s) homes would be Mahnacke Park.
Oak Hills is gorgeous, mid-century modern type homes near I10/410 in the med center.
Terrel Hills has homes in from the mid-50s onward that might work.

SAISD has a poor reputation, but as always look at individual schools and what you intend to put into the school.

I agree with Lavaca, Mahncke Park, or even Highlands area. The schools in Lavaca are better, but if you put into it, you may get a better school from it in the other areas.
Maybe all of San Antonio Independent School District would benefit if more parents got involved like they did at Bonham and Brach Hihg.
