Looking to install new fence around home. Partial chain link with planks inserted for privacy and a smaller portion of a metal grid to support vines and growth so it will look like a plant covered wall.

How does it work with neighbors? Do I ask them to pay for a portion of the fence. Do I ask to tear down their fences or do I just build a fence next to their existing and decrepit fence?

I also desperately need recommendations for fence businesses to install. Ideally some small independent guy or group that does them would be great.

I appreciate any information anyone has on this. It has become a potential hazard for my kids.

You can always ask a neighbor to help with the cost, but I wouldn't count on it. Especially if you have a specific type like the one you described in mind. For the same reason, you might have pushback from them if you want to tear the existing one down. Since it sounds like an eyesore, that might help in both respects, but I wouldn't count on it.

Never hurts to ask. Worst that could happen is they say no to both requests.

I wouldn't count on the neighbors and I would probably; almost certainly, put in a privacy fence. Chain link fences will work but my experience are they are a pain to maintain especially at the bottom.

I have used Lowe's to install a first rate fence. They use private contractors but one won't have to worry about them not showing up or not completing the job. I thought the prices was pretty reasonable. I would not use an independent company UNLESS they were a long time company with excellent references.

Forget the neighbors and make sure the fence is just inside your property line unless there are restrictions against this type of fence.
