For diamonds, if you have time to invest, the
Premier Diamond and Jewelry Community | PriceScope forums are full of good info, and plenty of feedback regarding various vendors if you're ok with ordering online or via phone. The community is also happy to provide opinions to newbies. I spent what felt like years of my life on those forums educating myself about stones, and then ordered an engagement ring from a vendor in NY's diamond district.
We did use Americus Diamond for our bands and later for engraving. They were good for both. If you're ever in Houston, I'd recommend a trip to Whiteflash's office for a good education. They do some nice, clean work.

I don't know if this would be hijacking the thread or not, but since the OP asked about Jewelry in San Antonio, do y'all know where would be a good place to find quality gemstone jewelry?
