Hello everyone ,

Need some advise here . my situation :

I previously held a driver license from Kansas state which expired in 2012 . Since I was not in the country , i could not apply for an extension.

Now that I have moved to Texas and its been > 45 days , I was planning to apply for a texas drivers license.

Ques :

- Can I show my expired Kansas license and request for TX license ?
- Should I call the Kansas DMV and see if they can extend my KS license before applying for TX license ?

Appreciate a quick response

Just went through this with a family member. If you have an out of state license, and it is expired, you will have to take both the written and driving tests. One exception to this is if you were out of the country for military service and the issuing State has provisions for extensions beyond expiration dates for military overseas service, it is possible to skip the tests.

Recommend going to the DMV mega-center on Huebner. You can make a reservation from your phone, and the waits are extremely short given the number of people working there. If you do end up taking both tests, you will generally show up first to take the written test and have your photo taken. You will then return for the driving test and, following successful completion, will be issued your temporary license. Hard copy arrives in the mail 7-10 days later.
