Sell your flat in jolly 'ole England & buy my house for 10% below market rate! Disclaimer: neighbor's dogs bark like crazy in the middle of the night. Are you deaf? Probably not.

Choc-b, since you are so new to everything, why not rent (house or apartment) for a bit first? We did, and I'm glad I got to know the area first.

Welcome to San Antonio! There are lots of places to look. Yes, yard=garden. Nearly all homes here are what you would call semi-detached. Single family, free standing homes. Climate is a bit warmer than you may be accustomed to. What part of the UK are you coming from? Spent several years in sunny Dorset. Miss the coast...

Define best? Do you want to live right in the middle of the action? or Do like quiet? Do you want to have a good bit of property or do you want live right "on top" of your neighbor. Whats best for me is different then whats best for you. I would rather live a bit outside the city(and I do)

I would be looking around Boerne, Spring Branch, Bulevere area. Just outside the city, but close enough that its not "to far"

If you're looking for modern homes without a huge yard (garden), Stone Oak area, Blanco Rd. near Hwy 1604, or even Interstate 10 near Hwy 1604 are as good as any areas to start.

Surrounding areas like Boerne and Bulverde may be too long a commute, and many homes in those areas are on acre+ lots. I live in Bulverde, and I'm on 5+ acres. I'm retired, but my wife still works, and her commute is 45 minutes to San Antonio.

Depending on your budget Lincoln Heights might be a great option.

Homes here are detached.

Semi-detached is a bit more like a duplex, though in the UK they're more like townhomes but with only two units together (my English ex didn't like me referring to them as "townhomes," but to my American eye that's what they were like, IMO, albeit usually with a decent sized garden).

I can't offer specific suggestions on where to live without more info. We live near downtown (Southtown) and love it.

I'd second the recommendation to rent, not sure if that was your plan. Where is your other half working?
