Thought I'd attempt to separate this from "biking the Mission Reach" //www.city-data.com/forum/san-a...riverwalk.html thread, as there are different amenities/issues with both. As we sometimes have visitors that don't bring bikes, the Greenway trails are a non-starter since there are presently no B-cycle rental kiosks; not sure if these might be added at a later date.
For those unfamiliar with the trail system, a description and links to printable pdf maps of the various trail segments is here City of San Antonio | Official Web Site - Parks & Recreation Department . Of note, the Salado greenway segment that used to end at Hardberger park has now been extended under Blanco and Wurzbach parkway almost all the way to Walker Ranch park (West Ave/Nakoma).

There have been other threads on the Greenway trails.

About your guests without bikes, some of the bike shops here rent bikes...Alamo Bike Shop and Bike World both rent bikes. Personally, I bought a couple of spare bikes fairly cheap on Craigslist and I keep them for my guests because it's cheaper and more convenient than renting.

You're never too old to learn. I taught my husband so I'd have a riding buddy.

Encountered a couple "Trail Stewards" during our ride today at Leon Creek. As we were completely unaware of the program, they were quite informative. This started in March of '13 and they try to provide a presence on all Greenway trails (but not on the Mission Reach), providing assistance with injuries, minor bike repairs, summoning help if needed, checking for graffiti or road hazards, etc. They're outfitted with dark green polo shirts, on marked city bikes and are city employees, not volunteers as I'd initially assumed. Riding 30-40 miles a day and getting paid....nice.

Salado Creek north segment is now extended/paved to immediately underneath US281. Was surprised as we expected the greenway path to go over 281 as an aside to Wurzbach Parkway. Coming east from McAllister Park, the paved trail extends all the way to Jones-Maltsberger. Lots of riders/runners were using the Wurzbach Parkway bridge over J-M last Sunday (no construction workers present) so it's now theoretically possible to go from Huebner all the way to near BAMC on Sundays with minimal off-roading.

Though it's not OFFICIALLY open, the Medina trail segment from Mission Del Lago golf course is essentially complete all the way to Pleasanton Rd. Going west (upriver) beyond that trailhead, which is closed, the trail fizzles out right before the RR bridge over the Medina river.

Salado Greenway now extended ~2 miles north of Huebner all the way to 1604 where a trailhead remains under construction. Was surprised to see that Inwood subdivision has it's own access ramp- marked TWICE with signage saying it's for residents only! Curious if SA taxpayers funded that.
