Damn...hate hearing about the loss of such strong personalities like this. I was actually going to try and go by this week sometime for a burger.

Sadly, I never got to eat there. A buddy of mine, who I lunch with frequently, talked of Joes and we had plans to go there one day. He started eating there as a kid when visiting his grandmother nearby. He raved about the hamburgers as well as the experience in going there. I was looking forward to going there for lunch but we waited too long.

Wow, sorry to see this lady pass on.
I hope one of her relatives will run the hamburger stand, it was such a unique experience to go there.

I remember you put your money on the counter, she had change and bills laying all over the counter, which was fine because nobody would dare think of stealing it.

I remember Rush Limbaugh playing in the little shack. She was definitely an opinionated lady and you could get her going if you mentioned the president...

I also remember long-time customers sitting at the counter with their sons, trying to pass down the tradition and the unique experience of eating there. There just wasn't another place like that.

yessir.

couple months back I went in and like always asked for one of everything on the menu.

that would be - burger - bag a chips - and a Root Beer in a bottle. $2.35

ready to leave, realized I only had a hundred dollar bill in my wallet.

Phillis said "no problem. pay me next time".

then I thought about my front pocket.

had exactly $2.35 in change, and I said I'll get your tip next time.

Joe's Hamburgers..

kinda doubt it. butt, maybe.

in the early 60s we went for lunch at Joe's fairly regularly.

Mama Hilda ruled the roost then.

walk in. sit down. do not speak until you were spoken to.

Hilda would squawk - "what you birds want today?".

after lunch would be a block drive west on Pasadena.

that's where Kit Carlisle lived.

early hotrodder, he had a 23 T Bucket that was talk of the town.

R I P Phyllis....... thanks for all the burgers and chips .... and caring about us in your own way. I was one of those 'birds'.

Mud, you and I apparently found Joe's about the same time. We moved to that part of town in 1957 and started going to Joe's in the early 60's too.
