So DISH Network is closing up all the Blockbuster video stores it bought a few years back. When was the last time you rented a movie from Blockbuster in San Antonio? I remember heading to the one at 281 & Evans but I don't think I really ever noticed it close. Was it in 2009? Or earlier? I really don't remember.

Do you remember when your local Blockbuster finally closer? Or is it still open for business & renting films? Sometimes I feel as though I miss it :/

The wife and I were out and about on Saturday and we were talking about how surprised we were that the one we saw somewhere way down Military was busy. The one by us over on Tezel seems to be doing a decent amount of business as well.

I miss the "video store" days of the 80's and 90's and it is kind of funny how Blockbuster steamrolled in and caused every little store to close and then they themselves closed.

Someone yesterday said it best--"kind of weird that an industry emerges out of nowhere, becomes a staple of everyone's everyday lives, then disappears without a trace 20 years later"

yea i miss those days. back before walzem got really ghettofied, i always wanted to go to the blockbuster there cause they had better games but my mom rarely went there. too cheap to go there. i had to settle with the hollywood video across the street. before it was hollywood video i think it was called video central.

My memories of Blockbuster are not fond ones. Having to hurry back with DVDs to beat their deadlines. Having to stay up later watching a disc than I wanted to because it was due back the next day.

Late fees finally drove me away from there. Once I switched to Netflix for DVDs, I never looked back.

Good riddance.

The one on Jackson Keller always looks dead. I had to rent a movie for a class earlier in the year and went to the one on Austin Highway (or was it Harry Wurzbach? I'm sure smuboy will school me after I post this...) and it seemed appropriately busy. Aside from having to rent that movie I haven't needed to go to a blockbuster in ages.

People are too lazy to drive to store, get out of their car, go in the store, pick video, drive back and return it at an appropriate time so others can have the chance to watch the movie without waiting on others to return it. Who wants to pay over 3 dollars a movie for all of that when you can keep your jammies on and rent a movie from a redbox or Netflix for much less?

I wonder how much longer Redbox will stay afloat? Maybe in the future you'll pay your dollar, insert a thumb drive and the machine will copy a digital version of the movie to your device.

What if they make disposable thumb drives where you can only watch the movie once?

Remember those movie DVDs that were cheap but would "self destruct" after 24 hours or something like that by turning black on the readable side? I forget what they were called.
