A few weeks ago, I was at my GF's house on the NW side of town, when a van comes down the street, with a passenger who was going door-to-door dropping off something in a plastic bag at every house, including my GF's. Turned out to be the 2013-2014 Greater San Antonio "Real" Yellow Pages, along with the smaller "Companion" copy. No Residential White Pages, but then I knew printed copies of the Residential pages were made available only upon request starting about four years ago.

So, I come home today, to find a flyer on my door, advising me that the Real Yellow Pages are now being distributed in my area, and if I want a free printed copy, call the toll-free number provided to request the print version.

Seems odd that in some neighborhoods, directories are being distributed to all households, but in others, they are only by request. FWIW, I still have AT&T landline service at my residence.

They dropped it off at my house without me asking. Wish they wouldn't because it went straight to recycle. I really don't need anyone to print out part of the internet for me. I can see how some older and those without access might need it, but the printed yellowpages is a dinosaur.

Literally just walked in the door after picking up the yellow pages and putting it in the recycle bin. We used to keep the little one in the car, but with a smartphone, no longer needed.

Probably applies to about 99% of the population now.

However, I don't have a Smartphone. I can look up numbers on the computer, so a printed directory isn't the essential tool it once was. For me, though, I can look up a number in the printed directory as fast or faster than logging on and finding it that way. Then there are those couple of times or so a year that the power goes out for several hours, and I need to make a call. I might use a couple of the coupons in the back of the book.

I could live without the printed directory, but it's one of those things that when you need it, you'll wish you had one. I called the toll-free number to request a printed copy, but the recorded message says to call back during regular business hours M-F. It did give a web address also, which I visited, and filled out an online form to request the printed directory be delivered to me - all while nearly everyone else who received one without asking, is tossing them out.

As long as businesses continue to pay for advertising they will be printed. If they are using USPS then that is thoughtful of them to support a struggling government agency although many also consider the USPS a relic.

Remember payphones that had directories attached to them?

Now for NightHawk877's next trick watch him tear apart his Nexus 7 with his bare hands.
