Now, THAT I agree with, MattTx! IMO, a 24-48 hour "grace period" in which they could be focused on themselves - after that, the search cost is ON THEM.

Removed previous comment due to more thought on the situation.

I think that one of the reasons people leave, and don't want to have their whereabouts known, is a genuine concern for their own safety. What if she was leaving an abusive relationship? What if he threatened to find her? She might feel safer just disappearing. A call to the LEA would be in order, if it was guaranteed that her location would be kept secret.

AFAIK, making yourself disappear doesn't break any laws. There's no mechanism within the law to fine someone without that.

When Jennifer Wilbanks the "runaway bride" dissapeared, the search for cost almost $43,000. She ended up having to pay around $13,000 back to the city of Duluth for the cost of searching for her. If that is not an fine then it was pretty close to one in theory.

If that is the case, then she had every right to run away. I have my doubts that is what happened though.
