I am an LVN that moved here to San Antonio a few months ago from Houston. I am having a really hard time finding a job.
My daughter said part of the problem is there are so many nursing schools here and an thus an abundance of nurses, both RN's and LVN's.
My experience is 19 1/2 yrs working as an LVN in a pediatric hospital, and 2 1/2 yrs doing utilization review in a hospital. Not much luck here finding a utilization review job as an LVN, and I am not sure I really want to get back into hospital nursing. I was headed for burnout, which is why I left the bedside in the first place. From what I have seen, I know I will not make anywhere near what I was making back in Houston, and I realize that working at a clinic pays less in general.
While browsing job listings, I have seen quite a few openings for LVN's to work at the Bexar County Jail, both with adults and with juveniles. Are there any nurses here that work there or have experience with that particular patient population? If so, how was the pay, working conditions, etc? What do you like or dislike about the job? Thanks for any info you can give me. Also, if anybody has any other tips on finding a job as an LVN here in San Antonio, I would appreciate it.

I worked in a prison here in AZ and I have to say it was the safest job I have ever had in psych. I liked the variety of problems that presented. You would probably have good benefits if you are working for a government agency. If the facility is privatized, then that's another matter.

Have you considered hospice? SA has a really high elderly demographic and this business is booming big time. You do, however, have to move heavy patients at times and I think this might keep some nurses out of hospice work. (Even a 100 lb woman who can no longer move is dead weight and pretty heavy.) Good luck with the job search! Hope you find something soon.

My daughter said part of the problem is there are so many nursing schools here and an thus an abundance of nurses, both RN's and LVN's.
