Hi, I am a fresh grad and just got a job offer at SA, so I am looking to rent an apartment in the area. Although I did some research, I don't know anything about SA (or Texas for that matter), so I need some advice on:
1. picking a neighborhood
2. picking the apartment or choosing which apartment management company I should go with (I'm not sure if this is the right approach tho)

my criteria:
1. budget for monthly rent is 900 per month, but I'm hoping to find something around 750 per month
2. studio or one bedroom is okay (I'm not too fussy about the number of bed, and it's constrained by the monthly rent anyway)
3. have a washer/dryer in unit
4. have a fitness center preferably
5. a nice, safe, and not-too-noisy neighborhood with decent traffic (the kind that doesn't throw you in to road rage mode)
6. also have a parking space available
7. newly built complex is definitely a plus
8. professional prop management (actually care about residents)

I'll be travelling most of the time for work, but there are days when I have to work in the office which is located in downtown (especially in these early days), so proximity to downtown is still somewhat important.

Thanks so much y'all!

Thanks Me007gold! I checked out Can Plant's site, but rent is north of 1k. any reason why you recommended me this area? 1221 broadway doesn't have any immediate availability. I'm currently at Austin taking care of some stuff and am a bit strapped on time, so I want to narrow down my options as much as possible, so I can visit all of them when I finally get to SA.

Legacy heights, 1111 Austin highway fit your criteria, I think (maybe not price)

Did you look at 1800 Broadway or the Mosaic? Both are near the Pearl and Can Plant but offer somewhat lower rent levels.

I feel like many of those options may be a bit pricey for the budget. I would hit Craigslist and Hotpads and check "Mahnke Park, " "Alta Vista," Monte Vista," "King William," "Olmos Park" and "Southtown." I know there are some complexes in the southtown area, i believe Cevallos Loft, St. Benedicts, and Hemisview (more downtown than any specific area), but many are older 4-5 plexes. All are within your budget. You might also want to check Brooks City Base. It's not downtown proper but new and has lots of suburban ammenities without being super far from downtown.

I really appreciate the input, y'all. I will look into all the suggestions, but I've looked into some that y'all suggested before, and either they don't have any availability atm (from their site), or they are a bit over my budget (I plan to negotiate, but I'm not sure if it's gonna work if the price is too far apart).

I guess I have to make something clear about proximity to downtown. I don't mind living like say 30 min away (drive), but that's probably the longest I'm willing to drive to downtown, so deerfield, shavano park, and others are still fine I think (some of the apartments piqued my interest - from their website because I'm still at Austin atm).

The Pearl area, in my opinion, is the best location for a young professional in the city. Several people that work for me live there and love it. Lots of restaurants and bars nearby, the Riverwalk for jogging/biking/walking, museums and easy access to downtown (can walk or bike to work on a nice day). It is a developing area, urban and unique - not cookie cutter like suburban development.

There are nice areas further north as well, but they won't be unique and won't be walkable to anything unless you look at Alamo Heights/ Quarry area or the Residences at La Cantera. These are high rent projects but you might be able to get into a small unit. Consider engaging an apartment locator who can help you find the best deals if price is more important than location/quality.

apartment locator sounds like a good idea. I've contacted several, and I hope they can ease this quest of mine. I've browsed around Pearl, and it looks very nice too. so many choices, so little time.. @_@
